"desc": "邵廣昭到了退休及步入暮年之後，也不免對幫助過自己的貴人更加感念。憶起貴人，除了養育之恩的父母和同甘共苦了大半輩子的妻子外，就屬幾位曾教導學業和為人處世道理的老師們。其中影響和幫助邵廣昭一生最大的老師，就是1980–1983年在美國攻讀博士學位時的指導老師Robert Reuven Sokal。另一位共同指導的老師是統計專家<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https://brmas.openmuseum.tw/muse/digi_object/71a1e842c621d2f3b1f704d5a3410830\">Jame Rohlf</a>。",

"title": "皇天不負苦心人",
"desc": "1976年邵廣昭從台大動物系助教轉任到中研院動物所張崑雄老師的研究室擔任約聘助理，協助張老師執行多年人工魚礁和台灣海域生態調查監測工作。從負責寫計劃書、出野外蒐集資料及寫完報告，可說是受到完整的訓練。1978年終於獲得助理研究員的正職。1979年，皇天不負苦心人，邵廣昭考上了教育部公費留學海洋生態學門，獲得留職留薪出國進修博士的機會。但在申請美國學校的入學許可並不順利，最想唸魚類方面的學校或教授都婉拒了邵廣昭的申請，最後只有<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https://www.stonybrook.edu/ecoevo/\">紐約州立大學石溪分校 (State University of New York at Stony Brook) 生態與進化系 (Department of Ecology and Evolution)</a> 的Dr. Sokal教授接受了申請。邵廣昭是Dr. Sokal唯一的華人學生，也是關門弟子。<br><br>Dr. Sokal的生物專長是昆蟲，特別是蚜蟲 (<i>Aphidoidea</i>) 研究，但他也開創了許多新領域的科學，包括空間分析、自相關、數值分類學等新的資訊與統計方法。當年電腦問世，他就應用電腦進行生物分類和演化的研究。因此原先想繼續研究魚類邵廣昭在Dr. Sokal的鼓勵下，於博士班時期開始鑽研系統分類學、多變值統計、生態及演化學原理，完全沒有碰到魚。<br><br>邵廣昭憶起到實驗室報到的第一天，Dr. Sokal帶他參觀實驗室時，不小心把手中的咖啡潑倒，邵廣昭本能地反應要擦拭地板，但是Sokal卻堅持自行清理。這和台灣「有事弟子服其勞」的觀念正好相反，這也和邵廣昭在攻讀博士的三年半中，知道Sokal的研究從不假手學生或助理代勞的態度完全一致。若文章要請他掛名為共同作者，那麼稿件必會被他改得體無完膚，宛如重寫，邵廣昭的博士論文即是如此。邵廣昭有一篇研究報告想和Sokal一起發表，也被婉謝了。Sokal說如果要共同掛名，一定得是他真的有參與該研究且具重要貢獻。這和當年在台灣作研究的傳統天壤之別，所有的研究成果都歸屬於老闆。<br>",

"desc": "1980年9月，博士班入學時共有七人，其中六人都是道地的美國人，由於英文不好，所以剛開始唸得非常辛苦。學習很先進的學問，舉凡生態學，在台灣教光線、鹽度、溫度等環境因子對生物的影響，然而在美國則是用數學模式、用討論的、必須理解。尤其演化學更艱澀，台灣當時沒有學校開設演化學課程。<br><br>歷經一翻苦讀，終於漸入佳境，特別是令系中教演化生物學的教授Douglas Futuyma感到刮目相看，因為邵廣昭從他在美國暢銷的Evolutionary Biology教科書中找到許多需要修正和更新之處。在留學第一年的前兩堂修指導教授Dr. Sokal的生物統計課時，問了一些統計的問題，Dr. Sokal便肯定邵廣昭的程度很好故可免修，使求學之路自信心倍增。",

"desc": "Sokal高大的身驅、烱烱有神的目光，初遇時的確會令人感到不易親近。但相處一陣子後，便發現他原來是位非常和藹可親且處處為別人著想，對學生也十分照顧的老師。邵廣昭記得在他留學的第一年，因為想家和妻兒難免影響到學習的情緒和成績，加上又有語言和文化的隔閡，萬般煎熬。Sokal知道後就予以安慰和鼓勵，並說台灣公費留學的規定不能攜眷，且一年後也僅能探親而不能依親，是件難以理解、不人道的規定。於是鼓勵邵廣昭第二年起，一定要帶著妻小赴美。也因此，邵廣昭下定決心，在一年後的暑假回台灣，帶著妻兒以探親的名義赴美並逾期滯美，直到唸完書再一起返台 (還好後來政府的規定也放寬了，邵廣昭回國之後也沒有受到究責和處罰)。<br><br>當時教育部公費一個月只有美金$450，正好付房租【因為有小孩，依規定要住有兩個房間，月租高的整套公寓 (Studio)】。長島 (Long Island) 的生活費高，健康保險費也貴的驚人，如只靠中研院的薪水與邵廣昭自己到餐館端盤子，以及妻子打零工賺的錢也無法支應開銷。正在發愁時，沒想到仁慈的Sokal主動給了半額的研究奬學金，也不用去兼助教或是幫他作計劃，讓邵廣昭完全無後顧之憂，可以專心唸書作研究。這應是讓邵廣昭能在三年半內完成博士學位的一大原因。",

"desc": "1995年Sokal退休後便把房子賣了，搬到學校附近的老人公寓。2002年邵廣昭趁著去紐約參加自然史博物館 (American Museum of Natural History) 所舉辦的「生命之樹國際研討會」時，順道去Stony Brook探望他。一走入屋內，看到他的房間裏堆滿了正在作研究寫報告的資料，印證了他畢生以研究為志業，樂此不疲的研究精神，是後生晚輩應該學習的榜樣。<br><br>那也是邵廣昭在2012年Sokal過世前所見到的最後一面。在他過世之前，未有機會邀請他到台灣來講學或訪問，也成為邵廣昭這輩子最大的遺憾之一 (因為在邵廣昭畢業後不久，Sokal就罹患了椎間盤突出的問題，不適合搭乘長途飛機)。 <br><br>Sokal為人誠實公正、光明磊落，寬大的胸襟更是令人敬佩。邵廣昭遙想著系中有一位支序分類學 (cladistic taxonomy) 派的大師級教授，因為和Sokal的理念不同，經常在文章及課堂中近乎人身攻擊地批評Sokal，讓人感到不自在。然而在選課時，Sokal卻指定一定要去修那門課，並說做學問要廣納各方不同的見解，再做出自己公正客觀的判斷。這番教誨深深地影響了邵廣昭一生治學和待人的方法和態度。",

"desc": "邵廣昭返台後，雖然沒有繼續鑽研博士論文數值分類學的方法論，但是在台灣大專院校教了三十餘年的課程，卻都是開「數值分類學」或「系統分類學原理和方法」等課。印證了Sokal所言：「一個人如果有兩個專長也絕對是好事」。邵廣昭當年在選擇論文題目時，捨不得放棄魚類，對數值分類學缺乏信心、猶豫不決，Sokal指點迷津說做魚類研究要跑野外、要經費、要看天吃飯。而若研究方法論，只要在研究室中動動腦、跑跑電腦，有機會早日學成歸國。於是邵廣昭接受了建議，專心投入數值分類的研究領域，因而開拓了另一個學術研究的專長。 <br><br>Sokal於2012過世之後，知名的演化生物學家<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_J._Futuyma\">Douglas J.
